Enugwu-Agidi Residents Express Confidence in PG’s Reforms on Security Levy Amidst Controversy
Enugwu-Agidi residents have expressed support for the security levy reforms introduced by the President General (PG) of the Enugwu-Agidi Brotherly Union (EBU), Hon. Chukwuebuka Onuorah, amidst controversy surrounding the initiative. The EBU has dismissed allegations of forceful imposition of a ₦6,000 levy on shop owners, calling them misleading and an attempt to misrepresent ongoing reforms.
The accusations, reportedly made by Ichie Ifeanyi Ndulue, Chief Press Secretary to HRH Igwe Michael Chidozie Okekeuche, claimed that Hon. Onuorah introduced the levy without due consultation. However, in an official statement, the EBU clarified that the security levy is not a new initiative but a long-standing practice in Enugwu-Agidi aimed at bolstering local security efforts.
"The security levy in question is not a new initiative introduced by the current PG. On the contrary, it has been a longstanding practice in Enugwu-Agidi, predating Hon. Onuorah’s tenure," the statement read.
The EBU further explained that under past arrangements, these funds were collected through the Igwe’s palace. However, concerns about mismanagement led to the decision to channel the levy directly into the EBU’s official account for transparent use in community development.
"Hon. Onuorah’s decision to redirect the levy payments directly into the EBU’s official account, ensuring they are utilized for community-wide projects, has disrupted this previous arrangement," the statement added.
Under the PG’s leadership, funds collected from the levy have been used to implement security-enhancing projects, including the construction of perimeter fencing around the Town Union Secretariat, the establishment of a security post, and the installation of a community entrance gate. Additionally, the Central Vigilante Team of Enugwu-Agidi, which plays a crucial role in ensuring safety, is being supported with funds from the levy.
Dismissing claims that the Central Vigilante Team is non-existent, the EBU reaffirmed that the security team is fully functional and aligned with Governor Charles Soludo’s broader security vision for Anambra State.
"We urge the public to view this situation critically and recognize the positive intent behind Hon. Onuorah’s leadership," the statement continued. "The allegations of intimidation are regrettable and appear to be exaggerated; no evidence supports claims of widespread coercion."
The EBU called on all stakeholders, including the Igwe’s palace, to work together in the interest of community development rather than dwelling on past disputes. It also urged the media and public to verify facts before spreading misinformation that could cause unnecessary division.
For further clarifications, the EBU has expressed its willingness to engage with concerned individuals and groups.
