PRESS STATEMENT JUSTICE FOR EMMANUEL: COMR. BALO CALLS FOR URGENT AND INDEPENDENT PROBE INTO COVENANT UNIVERSITY STUDENT’S DEATH

Comr. Balogun Damilola Boluwatife (Balo), Director of Media and Publicity, Arewa Youth Consultative Council (AYCC), Kogi State Chapter, has called for an immediate and independent investigation into the tragic death of Covenant University student, Toluwase Jesutunmise Emmanuel.

In alignment with the position of the National Association of Kogi State Students (NAKOSS), Comr. Balogun stressed the importance of transparency, accountability, and a comprehensive inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The deceased, a 500-level Building Technology student and indigene of Kogi State, reportedly collapsed during a football match after experiencing breathing complications, which led to his untimely death. The development has since raised serious concerns, with allegations suggesting possible negligence.

Speaking in Calabar on Sunday, Comr. Balogun expressed deep grief, describing the incident as both tragic and unacceptable.

“I join NAKOSS and the entire student community in mourning the painful loss of Toluwase Jesutunmise Emmanuel. The unclear and troubling circumstances surrounding his death must be thoroughly and transparently investigated,” he stated.

Earlier, the National President of NAKOSS, Comr. Sunday Adeola Simon, in a statement issued on Friday, also described the incident as tragic and extended condolences to the bereaved family, the Kogi State student community, and the Covenant University community.

“He was a promising young man whose life was cut short under circumstances that demand urgent and transparent clarification,” Simon noted.

Comr. Balogun further called on the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) National, South West Region, Ogun JCC, and other relevant stakeholders to swiftly institute an independent probe, particularly in light of conflicting accounts from university authorities and eyewitnesses.

He also urged the management of Covenant University to fully cooperate with any investigative process by making available all relevant medical records and necessary information.

Reaffirming his commitment to justice and accountability, Comr. Balogun emphasized that the truth must be established and decisive steps taken to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

“Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done.”
